Introduction Over 80,000... 65,000 +

The ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) specifies requirements for an environmental management system, contributes to formulation of policies and objectives including addressing regulatory requirements and information about significant environmental impacts (environmental performance). It applies to those environmental aspects which the organization can control and over which it can be expected to have influence. It is not prescriptive and is not obligatory, it does not state specific environmental performance criteria...

... Environmental Management System (EMS) ISO 14001 enables organizations to identify, analyze, classify and control its environmental aspects. Once implemented, an effective EMS will help in managing compliance with regulatory requirements, reduce exposure to liabilities, contribute in sustainable development through prevention of pollution, reduce waste and project a favorable image. To objectively demonstrate implementation, maintenance and improving environmental performance organizations can choose for an EMS certificate of registration  against ISO 14001 or EMAS (for the European Union).

The elements and structure of effective management of the environmental aspects within the grasp of the organization need be recognized as key component for change. It is for this reason that implementation of an EMS considers focusing to objectively demonstrate environmental responsibility (in the enterprise jargon, reduction of risk and hazards). Multinational and other organizations accept and embrace the EMS challenge to objectively demonstrate environmental responsibility -- The automotive (OEM) sector requires registration to ISO 14001 from their suppliers...

    The Eco-Management Audit Scheme (from EMAS current 761/2007) or EMS ISO 14001, originally released in September 1996 by the International Organization for Standardization (based in Geneva, Switzerland), provides the fundamentals to maintain an effective EMS and helps in demonstrating EMAS compliance. The size and structure of EMS ISO 14000 series is one of over 20 documents of which internationally only ISO 14001 is referred to the specification for registration (and basis for the implementation of best practices).

    Organizations requiring to meet EMAS [Eco-Managament Audit Scheme] EU Regulation Nr. 761/2001 need selecting an EMAS accredited registration body .

Among the many considerations, eco-management ISO 14001 requires leadership and continual improvement: identifying aspects and hazards, objectives & targets, processing and processes, documentation, measurement, and fulfillment of regulatory requirements (of the region in which the organization seeking certification resides, minimum, other consideration to the destination region - namely point of sale). But prior, an environmental management system commences with a policy.

EMS ISO 14000 comes as the result of the challenges we face through environmental impact, originally expressed in the 1992 "Earth Summit" in Rio de Janeiro. This requires focusing toward reduction and prevention of pollution. Within organizations themselves we have observed that Eco-Management is assisting companies to take a deeper look internally with a global perspective and this is leading to effective changes benefiting from cost reduction (at the operating level) and managing risks, and in addressing:

  • the quality of the working environment;
  • issue of employee morale;
  • discipline for competitiveness;
  • increase in productivity (thus the competitiveness of the company);
  • propitiating a scheme of different thinking;
  • reduction of risk (a key factor) which may include Occupational Health and Safety.

EMS ISO 14000 and specifically ISO 14001 is broader in scope than ISO 9000. ISO 14000 / ISO 14001 includes the full scope of an organizations business activities and its operational aspects.

ISO 14001 is compatible with ISO 9001. These two specifications correlate in coverage over 60%.  It is for this reason that the ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 schemes can be either mutually inclusive or exclusively.

The company / organization can either register or self-declare conformance to QMS ISO 9001 can opt to easily integrate EMS ISO 14001 thus combining their quality and environmental management system within the organization core operating system. Organizations such as; Southern California Edison (Integrated Management System ISO 14001:ISO 9001), Autlan Mining Company (Integrated Management System ISO 9001:ISO 14001), DuPont Performance Powder Coatings, Herberts-Doal, Pyosa, British-American Tobacco (ISO 9001:ISO 14001, ISO 19011), Pyosa (ISO 14001:OHSMS BS OHSAS 18001:ISO 9001) and United Technologies-Carrier. The clauses of EMS ISO 14001 follows:

  1. General Requirements
  2. Environmental Policy
  3. Environmental Aspects
  4. Legal requirements and Others
  5. Objectives and Targets
  6. The Environmental Management Program
  7. Structures and Responsibility
  8. Training, Awareness and Competence
  9. Communication
  10. Environmental Management System Documentation
  11. Control of Documents
  12. Operational Control
  13. Emergency Preparedness and Response
  14. Monitoring and Measurement
  15. Non Conformance and Corrective and Preventive Action
  16. Records, Control of
  17. EMS Audits
  18. Review of the EMS

These clauses view within an approach of overall sections: General Requirements, Environmental Policy (see 2), Planning (see 3 through 6), Implementation and Operation (see 7 through 13), Checking and Corrective Action (see 14 through 17), and Review of the EMS (see 18) -- this scheme has been practically adopted similarly by ISO 9001.
